Ten-ish Things to Take Away From the Coronavirus Pandemic
You are probably bored of hearing about it, I am and I've had it. So here's some of the more unusual observations I have made about the pandemic.
1. Donald Trump is a mealy mouthed arsehole. I mean I am no fan of Boris, but compared to that orange-flecked shit-gibbon, Boris is a fucking saint. His ramblings are that of a true megalomaniac and one with a totally unfounded and unwarranted belief in his own ability. If anyone needs a punch in the mouth with a BMW M5 Series, it is him.
2. Clapping the NHS is a lovely gesture. But it is just a gesture. I do hope people will remember this when the next election comes around and will then vote for a party that will fund it properly and not sell it off to the highest bidder and force private healthcare upon us all as a result. I'm hoping Boris's time spent in hospital may have altered his mind on this a bit. But, it's pretty much Tory policy to sell off the things that save you for a bit of extra money.
3. The lockdown happened two weeks too late. Airports, shops, schools should have been closed two weeks beforehand. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but I said it back then too. People were flying in from Madrid and Italy, where the virus was already taking hold, and wandering into the UK untested, unchallenged and not stopped for weeks. The government's eventual decision was right - but it came far too late due to the despicable idiot Cummings and his ilk not taking it seriously enough.
4. Anyone saying the lockdown 'isn't working in controlling the virus' is a complete dickhead. It is. If we had not locked down, by now we would be talking about 75,000 to 200,000 dead, the NHS in a state of collapse and the country would effectively be out of control. We'd also be nowhere near the peak of the virus. That's not speculation - that is from the data mapped out by the people the government uses to decide its responses. The Herd Immunity plan would have led to 500,000 deaths. That's what Cummings was advocating as the best approach in early to mid March. Essentially because he is an evil thundercunt.
5. This is not a sign from god, it isn't a sign of the apocalypse, it isn't judgement. These things happen on average once every 100 years. They are horrifying and kill too many people. However, we are the first generation to really be able to do something tangible about it and to reduce its impact. All that requires of most people is to sit on their arse, drink and eat and watch TV or play games. That isn't too difficult to ask.
6. Economy Economy Economy. Bored of hearing about it. Yes I understand it will have an impact on things. Perhaps some of these businesses should have paid into contingency funds instead of awarding shareholders fucking billions in dividends every year. As for economy, I'm pretty sure if you could tell someone they could lose a couple of hundred quid or more and survive the virus, or not pay it and die, they'd take the cash hit.
7. Austerity was a lie. You know the Coronavirus has killed a fair few thousand, well they reckon Austerity has seen off around 200,000 people over the last 10 years or so. Now we know, given the money that they can find, that it was all simply party policy and not a necessity. They killed people on the back of a policy decision. Let that sink in. And ten times as many as the virus has managed so far.
8. The lockdown should not be lifted any time soon. Not until the number of cases is dropping down into single figures in most regions. Whether that is 3, 6, 12, 18 weeks or whatever, it has to be the case. Otherwise we simply get a resurgence of the virus again when things open. When we do reopen - any potential case should be tested, isolated and contacts traced as happened in Germany and Korea so successfully. Borders should not reopened until we have had several weeks of no new cases.
9. For every dickhead flouting the lockdown, there are 100 great people that are adhering to it and doing their best. By staying in, we've taken pressure off the NHS and allowed them to treat almost all of those that need it. Though our approach to care home cases has been appalling (and replicated in Italy and Spain unfortunately). If you are doing your bit, then you should be proud.
10. This is the most salient point. Yes the virus is nasty (I know, I have had it) but you would most likely survive. But that isn't the point of the lockdown. It isn't about you not getting it (although that is a happy benefit of the policy) it is about stopping those that would be in real trouble with this illness from getting it. Which seems to me the elderly and people with underlying medical issues. The lockdown is about protecting THEM, not you. It is about helping the NHS cope with a caseload that is manageable so they can save more people. So instead of being a selfish twat, have a bit of fucking empathy if you are one of the nobs trying to head to the beaches, town centres or parks for a drink with your mates or to sunbathe.
Finally, the government has promised lots of financial assistance, so make sure you use it if you need it. If they fail to deliver on it - then remember that when the next election comes along. Just remember, that they didn't take this seriously until mid-March. We had three months to prepare for it and the response has been a shambles from start to finish. Every promise they have made they are yet to deliver on. 100,000 people being tested a day by now apparently and we have barely hit 10% of that. I've had it, so has my wife. Neither of us are counted in figures, we could donate blood plasma to help with a vaccine, but nobody has organised that. We could be studied to see how long immunity may or may not last - nobody's done that. Not surprising given the government can't organise enough gowns or protective equipment for nurses and doctors on the front line.
So just remember when this is all over and Boris is triumphantly pointing out how he led us through the worst crisis since the second World War, it wasn't him and his idiots that did the groundwork, it was the key workers, the NHS, the people who stayed at home when asked to. If that's you - then you deserve all the credit in the world.
